Uterine Fibroids

Frequently Asked Questions

Fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomas, are non-cancerous growths that develop in the uterus. They are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue and can vary in size from small, pea-sized growths to larger masses. Fibroids are common, particularly in women of reproductive age. Here are some key points about fibroids:
Symptoms:
Many women with fibroids do not experience symptoms and may not even be aware they have them.

However, when symptoms do occur, they can include:

Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
Pelvic pain or pressure
Frequent urination
Difficulty emptying the bladder
Constipation
Pain during intercourse
Abdominal bloating or enlargement

Causes:

  • The exact cause of fibroids is not fully understood, but they are thought to be influenced by hormonal factors, particularly estrogen and progesterone.

Diagnosis:

  • Fibroids can be diagnosed through pelvic examinations, ultrasound imaging, MRI, and other tests. A healthcare provider may use these methods to determine the size, location, and number of fibroids.

Treatment:

  • Treatment for fibroids depends on the severity of symptoms, the size and location of the fibroids, and the patient's reproductive plans.
  • Treatment options include medications to manage symptoms, hormonal therapies, minimally invasive procedures (such as uterine artery embolization or myomectomy), and in some cases, surgery (hysterectomy) to remove the uterus.
